Don't forget to file your self assessment tax return

28 Dec 2018

The deadline for submitting your 2017/18 self assessment tax return is midnight on 31 January 2019.

The only exception to this rule is if you received a notice from HMRC to make an online tax return after 31 October 2018. In this case, you have three months from the date of issue to submit your return.

Those who are late in submitting their return face a penalty of £100, even if there is no tax to pay, or if the tax has been paid on time. Additional penalties are due for continued late payments and late filing.

Last year, over 11 million self assessment tax returns were due, of which 93% were filed online before 31 January 2018. The busiest time for filing proved to be between 4pm and 5pm on 31 January 2018, when 60,596 returns were submitted.

Over the 2018 festive period, 6,033 self assessment tax returns were submitted on Christmas Eve; 2,590 were submitted on Christmas Day; and 7,655 people filed their tax return on Boxing Day.

We can help with all aspects of self assessment, including filing your returns on your behalf.
